Farmhouse

A traditional dwelling housing farm animals and crops on the ground level and the farmer and his family on the first floor. Typically, Maltese farmhouses are set around an open courtyard and are over 100 years old. They will include many traditional features such as: mill rooms, arched stoned ceilings, niches, mangers, fresh water wells and flagstone floors. Farmhouses are built with limestone blocks of approx 10 inches high and 19 inches long. The walls are traditionally very thick (about 1 metre) and the apertures small – thus keeping the buildings cool in the summer and protected in the winter. The roofs are made of limestone slabs supported by wooded beams.
