Residential Status

Types of Residency

  • Temporary Resident
    A temporary resident is a person who exceeds the normal 3-month tourist visa by obtaining a permit for a 6-month period. The extended tourist visa is renewable. Should a temporary resident choose to work, they are taxed at the same rate as a local.

  • There are two types of permanent residency; these are Ordinary Residents (EU Nationals) and Permanent Residents (any nation). Returning migrants would be normally be classified as Ordinary Residents. The main difference is in the taxation regulations.


Conditions of Residency

  • Capital / Income Qualifications
    • Evidence of a minimum annual income of Eur24,500 (Lm10,518)
      OR
    • capital equivalent to Eur352,000 (Lm151,114) or more, in the form of bank account holding, real estate, investments & assets anywhere outside Malta

  • Acquisition/Rental of Property
    Within one year from issue of residents permit
    • Must purchase a residence in Malta at a value of Eur120,000 (Lm51,516) or more for a house or Eur72,000 (Lm30,909) for an apartment or maisonette.
      OR
    • Rent/lease property with a minimum annual value of Eur4,200(Lm1,803.06).
      Unless in Special Designated Areas, investment in real estate is limited to one owner-occupies house/apartment.

  • Annual Income Remitted to Malta
    • Minimum income to be brought into Malta is Eur15,000 (Lm6,440) per residency applicant and Eur2,500 (Lm1,073) per dependant.

  • Employment/Business Engagement
    • No employment or engagement in business is permitted unless authorised (i.e. work permit) is obtained from the Director of Labour. For more information go to the Employment and Training Corporation Website http://www.etc.gov.mt/
      However, the official Government policy welcomes overseas expertise especially in tourism, manufacturing and catering.

Documents Required for Permanent Residency

  1. Completed and signed application form http://www.gov.mt/
  2. Certified copy of passport
  3. Applicant, spouse & dependants details
  4. Three passport photos of applicant/spouse & dependants
  5. Marriage certificate (or certified copy)
  6. Bank reference for applicant
  7. Police Conduct certificate (a subject access enquiry is required for UK residents & British citizens)
  8. Two references by professionals.
  9. A declaration, signed on oath in front of a Notary/Lawyer confirming no criminal record/conviction or ongoing proceedings.
  10. A bank certificate confirming an annual income of Eur23,300 (Lm10,003) or capital of Eur352,000 (Lm151,114) for applicant and that he is able to import to Malta a minimum annual income of Eur14,100 (Lm6,053) plus Eur2,350 (Lm1,008) for every dependent.
